The
Moat House, Appleby Magna
"The history
of England writ in stone"
One of Leicestershire's historic homes; a
grade II* listed
building with a history dating back to mediaeval England, on a site
with
a story which started in Saxon times.
"Appleby Magna is the best
preserved mediaeval house on a moated site.
The original late 15th Century gatehouse still stands
practically unaltered, and behind it is one of the best examples of
'black and
white' timber-framed houses in the county...., replacing the original
mediaeval manor house of the Appleby family who had been squires here
as far back as the reign of Henry II. George Appleby sold the
ancestral manor in 1560, and the half timbered house may have been
built immediately afterwards by the new owner."
Hoskins
GW, The Heritage of Leicestershire, 1950
Our lovely home is at the centre of an area
designated by English
Heritage as a Scheduled Ancient Monument because of its archaeological
interest. The original mediaeval moat was renovated in the early 1960s
and now provides a habitat for wildfowl and water plants. The
house retains many original features, including carvings above the
central fire place which have puzzled historians for hundreds of years,
drawings of which feature in Nichols' History
& Antiquities of Leicestershire, published between 1795 and
1812.
We consider ourselves custodians of the
Moat House with a great
responsibility to maintain its atmosphere and integrity.
