Moat House History

It is likely that there has been a dwelling on the Moat House site since Saxon times.  In Nichol's History and Antiquities of Leicestershire* a reference is made to Antekil de Appleby who was probably resident some time between 1114 and 1166.

1346 Edmund de Appleby played major role at the Battle of Crecy
1375 Edmund de Appleby dies
15th Century Stone gatehouse built as entrance to courtyard of manor house
1549 Property sold by George de Appleby
1605 Property acquired by Sir Wolstan Dixie and lands used as endowment for Bosworth Grammar School
Early 17th Century Timber framed additions to the gatehouse are completed
1841 Census shows farmer Thomas Taverner and family as the tenants
1854/5 Victorian extension – the last period of construction
1960 Closing order served on the house by Ashby Town Council – house is rescued and restored by Henry and Margaret Hall
